PWG is an initiative of Denis McCarthy whose University Librarian background led him to meeting Bill Mollison in 1978 (see pic below). He resigned from his University job in 1979 to further help Bill full-time which included spending 1980 accompanying Bill on his first lecture tour of the USA & Canada. He nominated Bill for the Alternative Nobel Prize in 1980, which he was subsequently awarded. Denis was awarded a Diploma in Permaculture Design in 1981 and is the first co-recipient of the Permaculture Community Service Award from the Permaculture Institute of Australia in 1983.
